A Modern Coastal Home, Framed by Trees

Fernie Wynd represents a return. Built on the childhood property of one of the owners, this project re-established deep personal roots while transforming the site into a refined, modern coastal home. Located along the waterfront edge of the Saanich Peninsula, the property is graced with mature trees and expansive views across Page Passage, giving Allan and Deborah a remarkable setting for everyday living.

Designed for Easy Enjoyment

From the beginning, the vision was clear: a tasteful, cleanly modern home that would be low maintenance, highly functional, and deeply connected to its surroundings. Generous glazing invites natural light deep into the interior, framing ever-changing coastal views and blurring the boundary between indoors and out. As an audiophile with a high-end sound system, Allan also envisioned a dedicated listening space. This was integrated seamlessly into the layout, allowing for an immersive audio experience without compromising the home’s calm, modern aesthetic.

Living with the Landscape

Situating the home close to the shoreline required a careful and deliberate approach. Tiered, landscaped patios step down toward the water, creating a series of outdoor spaces that feel at once protected from and connected to the ocean. A robust seawall safeguards the home, while allowing the landscape to remain natural and inviting.

Building our home with Philco Construction was truly a pleasurable experience from start to finish.”

Built to the Highest Standards

Throughout the build, we prioritized energy efficiency and long-term performance. From construction detailing to systems selection, the home was executed to the highest standards to ensure comfort, durability, and efficiency in a demanding coastal environment. We also responded to challenges with creative problem solving, which ultimately strengthened the design. To address the placement of the septic field, we located it beneath the tiered garden beds just behind the seawall, preserving both the usability and visual integrity of the outdoor spaces.

A Home Defined by Balance

Fernie Wynd is a study in balance: modern design grounded in natural beauty and a strong sense of place. It earned Silver for Best SFD over $2M, Silver for Best Outdoor Space, and Silver for Best Contemporary Kitchen at the 2024 Care Awards. The home’s greatest achievement, however, is how it transforms everyday life into elegance and ease. Whether the homeowners are gathering on the expansive upper deck or settling in around the lower firepit, the home offers spaces perfectly suited for entertaining and relaxing, with the Pacific Ocean as a spectacular backdrop.
